Initially, I had storyboarded an idea called Michael is Sick, which later developed into Magical Entry, an animation I made for a music video. It was made on Flipaclip, which was actually one of the first animation programs I tried on the iPad. Before that, I didn't know much about animation programs or how to use them, as I had trained myself traditionally and was pretty comfortable with paper. However, I really wanted to make this music video, and doing it on the iPad would be the fastest way! The music video entry was for a Flipaclip competition, so they provided the soundtrack, splitting it into one-minute sections and asking animators to pick the parts they liked. I thought to myself, I’ll give it a go using existing characters that I was already developing for my other idea — Michael is Sick. If it weren’t for this competition, I don’t think I would have developed the confidence to continue learning animation. Believe it or not, it changed my artistic journey immensely! Once I made this animation, despite the lack of knowledge, it was enough to tell me that I am capable of telling stories in this way and improving.
After making this for the competition, I decided I wanted to develop the magical girl character and demons further and created a proof-of-concept video. The more I worked on it, the more my ideas grew. However, it is all still a work in progress. I will update once the concept has been worked on further! And Michael is Sick will likely be its own separate animation with a different plot from Magical Entry and different character designs.
